New York, NY (AP) - Stocks are ending higher after minutes released
from the latest meeting of the Federal Reserve showed that the
central bank is ready to stimulate the economy.
The Fed said at its September meeting that it was concerned that
inflation was too low and that it could expand on its program to
buy bonds to encourage borrowing. After trading lower for most of
the day, indexes finished with modest gains.
According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial
average gained 10, or 0.09 percent, to close at 11,020.
The S&P 500 index rose 4 points to 1,170, while the Nasdaq also
rose 15 points to 2,418.
Rising stocks outpaced declining ones on the New York Stock
Exchange, where volume came to 920 million shares.
