Thomasville, GA - This summer we've seen a lot of stories where children have become sick or even died after being left inside of a hot car.

A study done by San Francisco State University stated that there have been 17 heatstroke deaths of children left in hot cars.

We ran into Sharon Kinsey and her six-month-old daughter Audrey out shopping today. Kinsey said she doesn't understand how a person could leave their child inside of a car.

"I don't see how people neglect their kids like. She's everything to me I don't know what I would do without her," said Kinsey.

The Thomasville Police Department is calling it their "Rolling Ovens" initiative and their ask the citizens of Thomasville to be on the lookout for kids that are left in cars. They said there hasn't been a case reported this year, but they want to be proactive in preventing one from happening.

"We encourage people to call us when they see this happening. When they see kids you know who are small call us when they see them inside of vehicle and feel like they are endangered," said LT. Eric Hampton, Thomasville Police Department Spokesperson

With the temperatures rising quickly this time of year TPD said that even leaving the windows cracked is not enough and that a child should never be left inside of a car.

"It's very hot and it could cause the kid some medical problems and it could even cause death," said LT. Hampton

Melissa Williams who has three young children and a fourth one on the way she told us it's up to the parents to make sure their children stay safe.

"It doesn't matter what you do, do not leave your poor babies in the car, anything can happen in a matter of 10 to 15 minutes," said Williams

If you see a child inside of a car you're encouraged to call 911 or the Thomasville Police Department at 229-227-3249.
