Valdosta veteran wins stellar Fantasy 5 prize worth $243K

ATLANTA – Excitement has surged for a Valdosta veteran who spotted a golden windfall from the Georgia Lottery while watching TV. Placido Benavides, 76, is one of three winners each to win $243,518 from matching all five numbers drawn from the May 17 Fantasy 5 drawing.

Benavides claimed his prize Monday at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Tifton.

Winning numbers from the May 17 Fantasy 5 drawing were: 2-6-11-16-20.

Quick Stop #0002, 2418 Rocky Ford Road in Valdosta, sold the winning Quik Pik ticket. Additional tickets with the jackpot prize were sold in Jackson and Cairo.

“As soon as I checked the numbers on TV Saturday night, I was shocked,” said Benavides, who is retired from the U.S. Air Force. “I kept checking the numbers over and over again, and I went back to the store and checked.”

The lucky winner and his wife, Sarah, have six adult children, “a bunch” of grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

“I’m just happy,” Benavides shared. “I want to pay off my car note and my mortgage, and I want to buy a new truck.”

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $15.3 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.6 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.3 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
