The Valdosta Fire Department is the recipient of the 2014 Chesney Fallen Firefighters Memorial Grant awarded by the Georgia Burn Foundation in the amount of $2,620 to support local fire safety and burn prevention efforts in the Valdosta community.

“The Valdosta Fire Department is pleased to receive this grant, as it will effectively help us provide life saving devices and educational resources for our citizens,” said Valdosta Fire Chief Freddie Broome. “These funds will specifically be used for the purchase of smoke alarms, a smoke generator for the fire safety house, fire prevention videos for kids and senior citizens in our area, and a video projector for educational and training purposes.”

The timing of the announcement before the Memorial Day weekend is significant, as the grant is named in memory of Brant Chesney a career firefighter with the Gwinnett County Fire Department. Chesney died in the line of duty while volunteering with Forsyth County Fire Department in 1996. The grant program in his name also seeks to honor the memory of all Fallen Firefighters who have paid the ultimate price in service to the State of Georgia.
