A south Georgia man is behind bars after police say he shot his estranged wife and left her for dead in the street.

Valdosta Police said that a Patrolman was just making his rounds when he saw a woman lying in the road at the intersection of East Moore and North Forrest streets on the east side of town.

When the Patrolman stopped to check on the woman, he found that 40-year-old Sharonda James has been shot multiple times.

When EMTs arrived, James was still showing vital signs. She later died at South Georgia Medical Center.

Police say it didn't take long to identify a person of interest

Aaron Kirk of Valdosta Police Department said, "People who knew the victim identified Mr. James as a suspect because of their marital problems. And witnesses who saw the vehicle leave the scene, described the person, and it matched his description."

Kirk says Jame abandoned his wife's car and was later arrested by agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Cuthbert, where he has been living. He says VPD doesn't know what brought Jame to Valdosta.

Kirk said, "The only motive we have right now is that they were going through a separation."

James is charged with malice murder and is currently being held at the Randolph County Jail.

Authorities expect for James to be transferred to the Lowndes County Jail as early as tomorrow.
