Valdosta City Prepares Proposal For SPLOST Funds

- Valdosta, Ga. - July 12, 2012 -

City and County leaders have a penny tax worth $150 million to divide up.

SPLOST is the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax that voters will decide on in November. This is not a new tax.

Valdosta City leaders held a special work session Thursday to plan their proposal. They're asking for $74 million dollars. That sounds like a lot of money, but it is only enough to give each department about half of what they are asking for.

"That's not a lot of money for a city the size of Valdosta. We have so many needs and we have so many items that are in disrepair, especially our sewer system," said Valdosta Mayor John Gayle.

If passed, this will be the seventh consecutive SPLOST tax. The city will take their proposal to the county Monday.

But do not confused SPLOST with T-SPLOST. T-SPLOST will be voted on July 31 and would be a new tax. There is also LOST which the county and all five cities are still working on dividing.
