Health Matters: Best Therapy for Sleep Apnea

In today's health matters, a new report suggests the most effective therapy for obstructive sleep apnea is a continuous positive airway pressure machine, or a C-PAP.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a nighttime breathing disorder caused by a repeated blockage of the upper airway during sleep. It can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

Researchers from tufts university reviewed available evidence on sleep apnea treatments. They say a C-PAP machine, which pumps air through a mask while a patient sleeps, is the most effective in reducing symptoms.

Many patients with the disorder end up abandoning the C-PAP because of side effects such as dry nose and mouth, nosebleeds and chest discomfort.

The report, funded by the US Agency for healthcare research and quality, also found a mouthpiece device to be quite effective.
