In today's health matters, most kids can safely participate in outdoor sports during the hot weather, however guidelines are needed to keep the athletes safe, says the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The doctors group updated their policy on participating in sports in the warmer weather. They recommend coaches, trainers and adults involved in youth sports receive training on how to reduce heat illness.

Other recommendations to keep young athletes safe include canceling or rescheduling events if it's too hot and limiting participation of children who've had a recent illness.

The policy statement is published online and will be part of the September print issue of the journal 'Pediatrics.'
