Augusta, GA - Valdosta State notched another win before the team starts the second half of Gulf South Conference action. The Blazers put away the Jaguars of Angelo State, 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-11). With the win, VSU moves to 17-7 overall and stays at 5-1 in conference play.
After dropping the first set, 20-25, Valdosta State dominated the rest of the match, going up in attack percentage with each set until ultimately reaching .406 in the final set.
The Blazers finished with a percentage of .259 led by Ruthie King, Chelsea Logan and Tania Tauiliili. The threesome hit for .364, .360 and .308 respectively.
Augusta State could only muster a .044 attacking percentage for the match with a low of -.172 in the final set.
Valdosta State’s defense proved strong against the Jags with 44 digs and 11 blocks. King racked up 20 digs in the match while Chelsea Luttfring tallied 10. Meanwhile, Logan, Tauiliili, Katie Onushko and Arielle Parnell all registered three blocks or more. Parnell led the way with five while Onushko and Tauiliili each had four. Logan threw three back at Augusta State.
While King, Logan and Tauiliili led in percentage, Irene Hannan paced VSU in kills. She finished with 18 while King hit for 12 kills on the night. Logan chipped in 10. Emelia Saulter dished out 30 assists while Hope Ripsam contributed 12. The duo passed for 13 more assists than Mary Beth Ingram of ASU, the only Jag with an assist.
Valdosta State will next face West Florida, the only team to beat VSU in conference play to date. The Argos and Blazers meet at 6 p.m. Friday in The Complex.
