Blazers Knock Off Lions

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State continued to stay in the hunt at the top of the Gulf South Conference with a 1-0 victory over North Alabama Sunday. The win puts the Blazers at 8-3 on the season and an impressive 4-1 in the Gulf South Conference and in current possession of second place in the league.

Valdosta State and North Alabama played a back-and-forth game throughout the 90 minutes, but the deciding goal did not come until early in the 78th minute.

As Alex McLay, the UNA goalkeeper, went to clear the ball, Casey Ponder applied pressure. The keeper’s kick ricocheted off another Lion back into the goal for the only goal VSU would need.

While North Alabama placed four shots on goal with 20 shots overall, the Blazers were more efficient, placing three of their six overall shots on goal. Margaret Stauffer and Abbi Edwards were the only Blazers to put shots on goal.

Leading the way for North Alabama offensively was Chloe Roberts. She finished with seven shots, two of which were on goal. Olivia Mills made four saves for the Blazers in 90 minutes of play for her seventh shutout of the season.

Valdosta State will look to take on South Carolina-Aiken at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
