CANYON, Texas – Valdosta State split at the West Texas A&M Tournament Saturday. The Blazers fell to national powerhouse West Texas A&M, 25-12, 25-19, 25-8, but bounced back to beat New Mexico-Highlands, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19.
With the split Saturday, Valdosta State finishes the weekend at 3-1 and moves to 6-2 for the season.
Chelsea Logan and Katie Onushko led the team in kills, each notching six, against West Texas A&M. Ashley Lala passed out 19 assists and matched Krista Bradford with five digs to lead the team.
After falling to the Buffs, Valdosta State pulled together to knock off New Mexico-Highlands. Highlands squeaked by in the first set, 26-24, but VSU rebounded with three straight wins: 25-23, 25-21, 25-19.
Logan led the team in kills again with 15. Tania Tauiliili notched 13 kills while Onushko and Destiny Berry each contributed 11.
Lala finished the match with 55 assists and 10 digs. Onushko led the team in digs with 12. Berry and Tauiliili helped VSU to 13.5 blocks, eight more than Highlands.
Valdosta State returns to action next weekend at the Armstrong Atlantic State Tournament.
