Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State suffered its first loss in its inaugural season when the Blazers fell to Tampa, 5-1, to stand at 4-1 on the season.
The Spartans brought a barrage of shots from the beginning, notching 13 shots in the first period and six in the second for a total of 19 to Valdosta State’s four, two of which were on goal.
Goalkeeper Olivia Mills saw her first challenge in goal and she responded with six saves, but Tampa placed 11 on goal with the first coming just five minutes into the match.
Jazmin Perry scored her fourth goal of the season off a rebound on Samantha Kay’s shot. Just over 15 minutes later, Gabby Russo put one in the top left corner from Brittan Spence, then Spence finished Tampa’s scoring with a hat trick.
She scored once before the first half to claim a 3-0 lead. Marta Bertsos found Spence on a breakaway for Spence’s second goal of the season. Spence opened the second half with a goal from Alyson Gregorowicz in the 54th minute. Two minutes later, Spence finished a Charlotte White cross for the 5-0 lead.
Valdosta State, determined not to be shut out, scored in the 71st minute. Morgan Cutts, one of four players to record a shot, finished to put Valdosta State on the board. But it was not enough.
Other shooters for VSU on the night included Abbi Edwards, Lauren Ingram and Emily Cooper, who had the other shot on goal.
Valdosta State will look to rebound against Barry on Sunday at 12 p.m.
