Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State punter Jack Fulford was named the Gulf South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week Monday after directing the Blazers to a 5-0 victory over No. 3 North Alabama last Thursday evening.
Fulford averaged 32.1 yards on seven punts against North Alabama, but more important than his per punt average was the placement of his punts. Time and again during the game Fulford sent high booming punts deep into UNA territory as four of his seven punts landed inside the Lion 20 yard line. None of the four were returned for any yardage, pinning the Lions in the shadow of their own goal post. Fulford's first punt was downed on the UNA 2 and led to a Blazer safety while he also had a punt roll out of bounds on the UNA seven and punts fair caught at the North Alabama 11 and 15.
Only one of Fulford’s seven punts on the day was returned, and the junior had a hand in stopping a potential go-ahead score as, representing the last line of defense, he made a tackle at the VSU 38 on a 47-yard return.
Fulford was also named GSC Special Teams Player of the Week on September 27 after averaging 44.8 yards on 10 punts at Southern Arkansas. He has now earned the award three times in his career after also winning the honor as a freshman in 2008.
