VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State continued its early run through the Gulf South Conference with a 1-0 victory over Delta State to move to 2-0 in GSC play and 6-2 overall.
The Valdosta State defense dominated the Lady Statesmen, only giving up three shots and leaving no shots on goal for keeper Olivia Mills to save. Meanwhile, Delta State’s Kelsey Elling was forced to do quite a bit of work. She made six saves on seven VSU shots on goal.
Margaret Stauffer and Blakely McClellan led the offensive charge, each tallying four shots. Stauffer placed two on goal and McClellan made her only shot on goal count.
In the 69th minute, Rebecca Miller dribbled the ball to the right corner and made a cross to McClellan. McClellan finished in the bottom left corner of the net for the only goal of the match. The goal is McClellan’s third of the season to give her the team lead in goals scored.
Emily Cooper, Hannah Mulkey, Miller and Lauren Ingram were the other Blazers to place a shot on goal.
Even though she did not tally a shot on goal, Abbi Edwards was a pest for Delta State all day. She took two shots and was the leading reason why Valdosta State was able to hold possession for most of the match.
The Blazers will take to the road to face Alabama-Huntsville at 3 p.m. Friday for their next match. After two more road conference battles, VSU will return home to face South Carolina-Aiken at 5 p.m. October 12.
