Starksville, MS -- Valdosta State took over the top spot in the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association’ coaches’ poll Wednesday for the first time since March 2, 2011.
The Blazers started at No. 6 in the preseason, then moved to No. 5 in the first poll of the season. After staying there for two weeks, VSU moved up a single spot every week until claiming the No. 1 spot this week.
Coming off a 2010 season that led to the Blazers playing for the NCAA Division II National Championship, Valdosta State claimed a preseason ranking of No. 1. The Blazers were able to hold it for four weeks until dropping down to No. 2 on March 2, 2011.
To reclaim the top spot this season, Valdosta State received 11 of 16 first place votes and finished 13 points ahead of No. 2 Indianapolis, a one-loss team that is also undefeated in conference play. To view the entire poll, click here.
The Blazers stand at 25-2 overall with a flawless 12-0 mark in the Gulf South Conference after sweeping North Alabama and No. 18 Alabama-Huntsville on the road last weekend. Today Valdosta State hosts Saint Leo at the VSU Softball Complex at 4 p.m. before heading to the road for doubleheaders against Christian Brothers and Delta State this weekend.
