VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State men's tennis player Philip Pakebusch has been named one of the top five male student-athletes in the Gulf South Conference as the conference announced Friday that the senior has been named a GSC "Top Ten" Award winner.

The GSC "Top Ten" Award recognizes the top five male and top five female student-athletes in the conference, in terms of athletic, academic and extracurricular achievement during the 2010-11 academic year. As a member of the 2010-11 "Top Ten" class, Pakebusch is now eligible for the Commissioner's Trophy, given to the top male and female student-athlete each year.

Pakebusch was dominant on the tennis court in 2011 as he led Valdosta State to its second national championship. He played No. 1 in singles play and No. 2 in doubles action on the year and finished the season with a 10-2 singles record and a 19-2 mark in doubles. He earned All-America honors as a singles player as he finished the year ranked No. 2 nationally as an individual and just missed the honor in doubles, where the top 10 ranked teams earn All-America status, as he finished the season ranked No. 11. Pakebusch's dominant play during the season led to him being named the ITA Division II Senior Player of the Year at the conclusion of the season while he was also named the Gulf South Conference's Player of the Year for the second straight season.

The Hamburg, Germany native was just as successful in the class room as he tallied a 3.66 grade point average during the Spring 2011 semester en route to a 3.33 overall grade point average while earning a degree in Management during the May graduation ceremonies.

Pakebusch's honor in 2011 marks the third straight year that a Valdosta State male student-athlete has been recognized on the GSC "Top Ten" Award list as former Blazer baseball player Jon Koenigsfeld was honored in both 2009 and 2010, a year in which he also received the Commissioner's Trophy.

Pakebusch was joined on the men's side of the "Top Ten" list by Arkansas Tech senior baseball player Matt Johnson, North Alabama senior baseball player Trey Mitchell, West Florida junior soccer player Frank Cope and Alabama-Huntsville junior basketball player Josh Magette.

Pakebusch and the rest of the "Top Ten" honorees will be recongized at next Monday's GSC Awards Banquet in Birmingham, Ala., during which the Commissioner's Trophy winners will be announced.
