Tallahassee, FL --
Some watch tennis as a fan. Others, dream of the day they'll serve up a career of their own. These Tallahassee Tennis Challenger ball kids say while standing at attention --- they're silently waiting for their turn.
Megan Stewart, a ball girl, says, "You have to run as fast as you can because they want to keep the ball going. It's pretty fun. You get to help the pros out there."
Daniel Sweeney, a ball boy, says, "It's been fun to help the pros because you get to watch tennis and you get to help pro tennis players."
For some the dream does come true. Current tennis player,John Paul Fruttero, got his start observing in the shadows when he was eight..
Fruttero says, "It was awesome. As a little kid it was something that I always wanted to do was play pro tennis. It just really inspired me and motivated me to work hard."
But it's not all fun and games. Six ball people with different functions are needed for a smooth running match.
Nathalie Phelps, a ball babe, says, "At the net pretty much run for the ball right away when the player serves and hits the net, then right away we pass it to the corner to the player who's serving."
Randy Hock, a ball kick recruiter, adds, "They've got to be able to catch and throw and think quick and move quick and get settled. They're supposed to get the ball, get it to where it needs to be and then disappear."
But these kids don't plan on staying hidden for long. Just until their careers can take off.
