TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Leon County Athletic Director Ricky Bell has confirmed to WCTV that one athlete in the county has tested positive for COVID-19.

Bell said he was informed of the news Tuesday morning.

He did not specify the school or name the player, nor did he say when the positive test occurred.

Bell added that everyone that worked with the athlete’s group has been sent home to quarantine for 14 days, adding that the students need a negative test before they can return.

Bell said that, in returning to summer workouts, they expected some positive tests.

“As much as kids are moving around now, it’s hard not to let a teenager socialize,” he said. “They are going to want to socialize with their buddies. It’s just hard to control that sometimes.”

As of Tuesday’s 11 a.m. update from the Florida Department of Health, Leon County had 596 total positive COVID-19 cases.
