TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Florida A&M University says the 2020 Orange Blossom Classic game against Albany State has been canceled.

“In light of the recent events with the current pandemic, as well as the decision from Albany State to cancel the football season, we are disappointed that we will not be able to host the 2020 Orange Blossom Classic,” Executive Director of the Orange Blossom Classic Kendra Bulluck-Major said.

The cancellation of the game comes a full week after the SIAC, Albany State’s conference, announced they were cancelling their fall sports season.

The Orange Blossom Classic was first played in 1933, with FAMU defeating Howard 9-0 in front of 2,000 fans, according to the game’s website.

“This was the must see game of the post season that helped establish the foundation of HBCU classics,” the website says.

Before the cancellation, the 2020 classic was scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 6.

The next edition of the Orange Blossom Classic, which will feature FAMU and Jackson State, is slated for Labor Day weekend in 2021.

“The resurgence of the Orange Blossom Classic is significant to the community and we look forward to its return in 2021,” Bulluck-Major said.
