Man accused in child’s death tracked down in Tallahassee
TALLAHASSEE, FLA (WCTV) - A man wanted in the death of a one-year-old baby in South Georgia was captured by U.S. Marshals in Tallahassee this weekend.
Rashard Nelson is currently in the Leon County Jail awaiting extradition to Dougherty County, Georgia.
U.S. Marshals say they got word on Saturday afternoon that Nelson was staying with a woman in a hotel on Railroad Avenue and they soon spotted the two walking down the street.
Deputy Commander Marty West with the Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force says when they tried to arrest Nelson, he took off running. West says U.S. Marshals chased him through an outdoor bar and ultimately tased him and arrested him in a parking lot nearby.
According to WCTV’s sister station WALB, police were called to a home on Marie Road in Albany last week and the child was pronounced dead on the scene. The Dougherty County District Attorney told WALB that the child died from blunt force trauma and the death was ruled a homicide.
Leon County Jail records show Nelson was booked in on Saturday, May 29 and is listed as an out-of-state fugitive.
