TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Florida State defeated Southern Miss Friday afternoon in its first game in the Oxford Regional. The Seminoles overcame a 2-0 deficit in the first inning by hitting three home runs en route to a 5-2 victory.

Parker Messick threw six quality innings and the bullpen tossed three scoreless frames to seal the victory.

Florida State now turns its attention to top-seeded Ole Miss, who defeated Southeastern Missouri 6-3 Friday night.

The Seminoles will turn to another lefty on the hill Saturday in Bryce Hubbart, who enters the contest with a 3.97 ERA. He’ll be matched up against the Rebels’ Doug Nikhazy, who enters with a 2.18 ERA and 114 strikeouts across 78.1 innings.

Below will be a running a live blog of tonight’s game. We’ll have score updates, analysis, stray observations and thoughts. FINAL: Ole Miss 4, FSU 3

Broadway strikes out the side in the ninth inning. Ole Miss wins 4-3. The Seminoles will play Southern Miss again Sunday at 2 p.m. in an elimination game.

Mid 9th: Ole Miss 4, FSU 3

1-2-3 inning for Hare. Last chance for the Seminoles. They’ll have Cabell, Simmons and De Sedas due up.

End 8th: Ole Miss 4, FSU 3

Nikhazy’s night is done. His final line: 7 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 16 K, 119 P, 81 S. Ole Miss closer Taylor Broadway (2.74 ERA) in to try to get a six-out save.

Broadway retires the Seminoles in order in the eighth inning. Jacob Gonzalez makes an outstanding play with his barehand to throw at Robby Martin for the third out of the inning. FSU is down to its final three outs.

Mid 8th: Ole Miss 4, FSU 3

1-2-3 inning for Hare. A dropped third strike put the leadoff runner on but Hare responds with a 1-6-3 double play.

End 7th: Ole Miss 4, FSU 3

With 106 pitches, Nikhazy comes back out to start the seventh inning. He strikes out the side to give him a career-high 16 on the night. He has thrown 119 pitches.

Mid 7th: Ole Miss 4, FSU 3

Kwiatkowski walks Cael Baker to begin the top of the 7th and Mike Martin Jr. will make another pitching change. Davis Hare is coming into the game with a runner on first and no outs. He’ll inherit a 1-0 count against Ben Van Cleve.

Hare allows a single to left against Van Cleve, and Ole Miss has two runners on and no outs with the top of the order due up.

Hare then gets Peyton Chatagnier to ground into a 5-4-3 double play on a 3-1 count. The next batter walks on four pitches and advances to second on a wild pitch.

Tim Elko then came to the plate and hit a weak grounder to shortstop, but Nander De Sedas threw the ball over Tyler Martin’s head, allowing two runs to score. De Sedas had all day with Elko playing on a torn ACL, but he rushed the throw and it cost the ‘Noles. That’s their third error of the night. Ole Miss retakes the lead.

End 6th: FSU 3, Ole Miss 2

Nikhazy bounces back with a quick 1-2-3 inning. He has 13 strikeouts. With 106 pitches, his night is likely done.

Middle 6th: FSU 3, Ole Miss 2

Hubbart gets the first out of the inning on a pop-out to first base. However, he subsequently allows a single and hit-by-pitch, and he is quickly removed. Clayton Kwiatkowski comes in to replace him.

Kwiatkowski walks the first batter he faces to load the bases with just one out. He then strikes out Hayden Dunhurst on a breaking ball in the dirt for the second. On the next batter, Mat Nelson catches TJ McCants leaning at first and fires a bullet down to Tyler Martin to pick him off and end the inning. Huge sequence there for the Seminoles to maintain their lead.

End 5th: FSU 3, Ole Miss 2

An unlikely contributor emerges in the bottom of the fifth for Florida State Isaiah Perry hits his first career homer on a 1-2 breaking ball down the left-field line to cut the lead in half. That was Perry’s first hit since April 27th and first hit against a lefty this season.

Tyler Martin then ripped a single to right field and Ole Miss immediately gets two pitchers warming up in the bullpen.

Logan Lacey added to the inning with a two-run homer to left field to give the Seminoles a 3-2 lead. That is the second homer in as many games for Lacey and his sixth in the last 12 games.

All eight of FSU’s runs this weekend have come via the long ball.

Nikhazy strikes out Mat Nelson and Robby Martin to end the inning. He has now thrown 95 pitches.

Middle 5th: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Hubbart surrenders a one-out walk but induces a 3-6 double play to end the frame.

End 4th: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Dylan Simmons reaches on a two-out walk, but Nikhazy strikes out Nander De Sedas to end the inning. He has nine strikeouts through four scoreless innings.

Middle 4th: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Hubbart gets a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 4th. He’s allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) through four innings. He’s thrown 74 pitches.

End 3rd: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Nikhazy goes 1-2-3 against the top of the ‘Noles order. He strikes out Lacey and Nelson. He has seven strikeouts through three innings.

Middle 3rd: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Ole Miss gets two runners aboard in the inning, but Hubbart gets TJ McCants to foul out to third on a 3-2 fastball and end the frame without any damage.

End 2nd: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Nikhazy struck out Cabell and Simmons for two quick outs. Nander De Sedas then reached on a hit by pitch, followed by a double down the left-field line from Jackson Greene. Isaiah Perry couldn’t drive them in though as he strikes out on four pitches to strand two runners in scoring position.

Middle 2nd: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Nice bounce-back second inning by Hubbart there to set Ole Miss down in order.

Jackson Greene made a great play at second to get Hayden Dunhurst for the first out of the inning, and a heads-up play by Hubbart to cover the bag after Tyler Martin dove after the grounder.

End 1st: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Tyler Martin led off with an infield single on a chopper to shortstop but Nikhazy retires the next three batters, including strikeouts of Mat Nelson and Robby Martin, to end the first inning.

Middle 1st: Ole Miss 2, FSU 0

Just like yesterday, the Seminoles face a two-run first-inning deficit. Jacob Gonzalez started by lining a one-out single to left on a hanging curveball from Hubbart. Hubbart then walked Tim Elko and a passed ball on breaking ball in the dirt advanced the runners to second and third.

The next batter, Kevin Graham, grounded a ball hard to second off the glove of Jackson Greene to score two runs.

Hubbart is struggling to command his breaking ball so far. He’s missed up in the zone on a couple and missed way up and out of the zone on a couple of others.
