Double drowning reported in Brooks County after boat flips in rural pond
BROOKS COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) - The Brooks County Fire Department says two people drowned after a boat flipped over in a rural pond near Dixie, Georgia, Sunday night.
The fire department says Brooks County 911 received a call about two missing people and the flipped boat behind 4746 Grooverville Road around 6:45 p.m. Sunday.
“Emergency officials from multiple agencies in Brooks County were dispatched to the scene immediately,” the fire department wrote on Facebook.
First responders noticed the overturned Jon boat, tackle and personal belongings in the water and determined the two missing people were underwater.
Divers and rescue boats were deployed immediately, and the drowning victims were found shortly after midnight, the fire department says.
BCFD says there were no witnesses to the accident, and the Brooks County sheriff’s and coroners’ offices are investigating. No foul play is suspected at this time.
Sergeant Quinn Fogle with Georgia DRN said that the agency has responded to four drownings in the South Georgia region in the last four week, and is urging everyone to wear their life jackets whenever they’re on the water.
“We want to encourage everyone to wear one. However, we don’t see enough adults wearing them, which is unfortunate. The four drownings that we have worked so far this year in the last two weeks have all been adults” said Fogle.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, family and friends,” the fire department says.
