TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Saturday is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, and the organization Sickle Cell 365 partnered with the American Red Cross Chapter in Tallahassee to hold a blood drive.

Free sickle cell screenings were also provided during the event.

Due to the pandemic, they are experiencing a blood shortage. The Executive Director of Sickle Cell 365, Mikaya Warren, told WCTV that for sickle cell patients, that can be critical.

“One of the major treatments for sickle cell patients when we’re in a crisis is blood transfusion, and so without adequate blood supply, that is very critical for our local area sickle cell warriors,” explained Warren.

Warren said each blood donation can save a life.
