TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Former Florida Department of Health data analyst Rebekah Jones has launched a campaign website saying she’s running for Florida’s First Congressional District seat. Currently, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) holds the seat.

As of Friday afternoon, the Florida Division of Elections website does not list Jones as a candidate for Florida District One’s congressional seat. Jones’ name was also absent from the Federal Election Commission’s list of candidates for the race Friday afternoon.

The title of the YouTube video posted on Jones’ campaign website says “announcement coming July 30, 2021.”

The video shows several of Jones’ appearances on national media outlets during the summer of 2020 criticizing Florida’s coronavirus data reporting. In July 2020, Florida reported a single-day increase of 15,300 coronavirus cases, which was a record at the time. The state had reported more than 10,000 new cases several times that month.

The video also included a clip Jones posted to Instagram on June 8, indicating she would run for Gaetz’s seat.

“One of the reasons I held off on making any final decisions about running for office was because that I hoped the criminal justice system would remove Matt Gaetz from Congress on its own,” she says in her video. “That is taking a very long time and none of it is certain, especially because the rich and powerful play by their own rules. So, if it takes me going home to Florida to run against Matt Gaetz, then I will do it,” she continued.”

Jones’ website says she is running as an independent.

The issues highlighted for her platform include the environment, government transparency and accountability, science, research and education.

“I have spent the last year fighting for government accountability and transparency, for ethics, for science-driven policy,” Jones said in another Instagram video posted Thursday. “And I’m taking that fight to the Capitol.”
