TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - A 17-year-old boy died Monday night in an apparent shooting in Tifton, according to officials.

Deputy Coroner Joe Thompson said that he was called out to a scene on Garrison Street at 11:46 p.m.

Injuries to the boy’s body, Thompson said, “appear to be consistent with gunshot wounds.”

The Tifton Police Department requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to assist in the investigation.

On Monday, around 10:38 p.m., Tifton police responded to a shots fired call on 13 ½ Street.

A short time later, police responded to the 1500 block of Garrison Avenue about a male found in a yard deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

The male was identified as Blake Haggins, 17, of Tifton.

Haggins’ body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and that no other details will be released at this time.
