THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) - Parks and recreation in the city of Thomasville is taking strides forward when it comes to revamping local parks, and making them accessible for all.

As a community space, Parks and Rec Manager, Mike Owens says it’s important for the parks to be walkable and accessible for everyone to use. After a bad storm last summer, some much-needed repairs were in order for Northside Park specifically.

“A tree fell and crushed the swing set,” said Owens.

However, due to the pandemic and manufacturing delays, the installation of a new swing set was pushed back until recently.

“We finally got the new swing set and got it replaced, and when we did that we decided to go ahead and upgrade it a little bit ad we included an inclusive swing and a handicap ramp to get into the play area,” said Owens.

The installation was completed about a week ago, and according to Owens, they were long overdue.

He said he hopes that with the new swing and the addition of ADA accessible equipment more people will be drawn to enjoy the park. The city parks are all currently under assessment for upgrades.

Owens says that the public has provided a lot of input when it comes to improvements, and accessibility has been a hot topic throughout the meetings.

“And, not just for kids,” said Owens. “We have a lot of our aging population that are in wheelchairs or walkers that we would like to get out to some of our parks too and it’s just not always that way.”

Owens says all of the community’s input from the meetings and from the online survey will be compiled together and will help determine a master plan for all of the Thomasville city parks.
