She is an experienced journalist and storyteller. Prior to coming to the sunshine state, she worked for two years in the golden state at KESQ in Palm Springs, Ca., where she was an anchor/reporter/MMJ. She also spent two years at KFBB in Great Falls, Mt., as the evening anchor and producer. Katie has covered a number of high-profile stories such as Hurricane Michael, the 2018 midterm elections in Florida, the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial and the Perris Prison home in Southern California, to name a few.
She loves taking on new challenges so she can be as well-rounded and dynamic as possible in the newsroom.
Katie graduated from California State University, Fullerton, with a degree in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast, in 2011 where she was distinguished as the graduating student with the most professional promise out of the entire Department of Communications. As an undergraduate, Katie wrote for the campus paper, co-founded a sports show, and served as president of the Campus Journalism Society. She received several scholarships and spent time in Italy and Vietnam as a student reporter. Her self-produced documentary on a medical mission in the rural province of Bac Kan won several awards.
After graduating, Katie interned at Entertainment Tonight in Studio City, Ca. where she covered several high profile events and was published a number of times on entertainmenttonight.com.
Katie has always wanted to ‘do the news’ and her family has several videos of her ‘reporting’ as a young child. Viewers can join her living out her childhood dream every weekday from 4-5 p.m. on Eyewitness News, which she anchors alongside her husband, WCTV anchor Ben Kaplan, and watch her reports during the nightly 11 p.m. news.
Katie and Ben were married in July of 2018. She was formerly known as Katie Widner on TV.
