MADISON COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) — An excavator that a semi-trailer was towing hit the bridge at Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 221 in Madison County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say they aren't sure of the extent of the damage at this time. Structural engineers are being brought in to evaluate the bridge to make sure it's safe before reopening.

Around 3 p.m., only one eastbound lane on I-10 was open, but all westbound lanes were open. An engineer was under the bridge examining damage on the underside.

Traffic on Highway 221 northbound was closed as of 3 p.m. Traffic beneath the bridge was being directed by troopers into the opposite lanes.

Although some chunks of concrete fell from the bridge beneath the eastbound lanes, the bridge inspection does not seem to be having a big impact on traffic flow.
