THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) — A 4-year-old child is in stable condition after a crash on U.S. Highway 319 N near Hillcrest Lane that happened just before 9 a.m. Tuesday, the Georgia State Patrol said.

Troopers say a mother driving her three kids to school was waiting for traffic at a subdivision exit, when another car coming from the opposite direction hit her car.

According to GSP, the driver, 19-year-old Rod Chaplic, was coming off a night shift in Moultrie, fell asleep at the wheel and crossed four lanes of traffic and hit the other car.

The 4-year-old was taken to a Tallahassee pediatric hospital to treat minor injuries.

Chaplic is facing a failure to maintain lane charge.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story said a 2-year-old child was in critical condition. The Taylor County Sheriff's Office was the agency on scene that told us that. GSP's investigation showed the child was actually 4 years old.
