DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WCTV) – The FAMU men’s basketball team closed the regular season with a tough 69-59 road loss to archrival Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium Thursday night.

The loss was the fifth straight for the Rattlers (7-22, 5-11 MEAC) who will likely be the No. 10 seed in next week’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at The Scope in Norfolk, Va.

FAMU was locked in a three-way tie with Bethune-Cookman and Howard University heading into Thursday’s games, but after the tie breakers, FAMU finished behind B-CU and ahead of Howard.

Desmond Williams led FAMU with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Marcus Barham added 13 points and Brendan Myles pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go with his nine points.

The Rattlers shot 32 percent from the floor and a dismal 16 percent from distance Thursday, and their shooting got them off to a slow start, leaving them down, 37-24 at the half.

FAMU did heat up some in the second half, outpacing the Wildcats, 35-32 in the scoring column, but the deficit proved too much to overcome, as B-CU extended their lead to as much as 20 points in the final stanza.

LOOKING AHEAD TO NORFOLK: Despite the losing string at the end of the regular season, FAMU can for the first time in three years, look forward to some redemption in the MEAC Tournament.

Parings for the tournament should be announced late Thursday or early Friday morning, but projected seedings would have the Rattlers as the number 10 seed with an opening round game on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
