TALLAHASSEE, Fla (WCTV) -- Local Girls Scouts held their 25th annual 5K and one mile run Saturday at Tallahassee Community College; but it also marked another special occasion.

The Run for the Cookies opened up the Girl Scout cookie season.

For the past 25 years, the event has been used as a fundraiser for the wider opportunity scholarship fund for the Girl Scout Council.

The hundreds of Girl Scouts in the Leon County area are part of the more than 2.6 million nationwide.

"Girl Scouts is the largest leadership program for girls in the entire world and it gives them great opportunities to do things they normally would not normally be able to do," said Jeanne O'Kon, the race director. "We know these girls grow up to do great things."

This year's event saw about 500 runners. When it first started 25 years ago, they had only about 80 participants.

For those who would like to purchase Girl Scout cookies, they will be available for the next three weeks.
