JACKSON COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) -- A 6-year-old boy who was hospitalized following an accidental shooting in Jackson County has died.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says the child, Ervin Gerard Sims Jr., passed away at the hospital on Tuesday. He had been airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in critical condition.
The shooting happened at 8:30 p.m. Friday at a residence on Townhouse Drive in Jackson County.
Deputies say an investigation revealed that a family member accidentally fired a handgun, striking Ervin in the head.
Investigators say the mother's significant other, Jaquarius White, is a convicted felon and was charged with felon in possession of a firearm. It is unclear who was responsible for the shooting.
The sheriff's office says an investigation is ongoing.
