LOWNDES CO., Ga. (WCTV) -- 911 operators in Lowndes County are dressing to a different theme each day to celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.

It's a week to honor the first responders, who are the first to pick up when calling for help.

They say it's not just operating the phone lines, and every call is different.

"We have to sit there. There's no getting up and leaving or falling apart," says Tonya Davis, with the Lowndes County 911 Call Center. "We have to sit there and make sure they get the help that they need. They stand right though it."

Davis has worked at the call center for 17 years.

She says the job can be rewarding, and some days, an emotional roller coaster.

In the past, operators have assisted several babies being delivered over the phone.

She says the spirit week is a fun change, during their every day serious calls.
