MCDONOUGH, Ga. (AP) -- They said their 2-year-old foster daughter was choking on a chicken nugget, but authorities found injuries all over the girl's body.
Now Jennifer Rosenbaum has been sentenced to life plus 40 years in prison. Her husband Joseph also was sentenced Thursday for the death of Laila Daniel, to 30 years.
Rosenbaum called police in 2015 to say she had removed the nugget from Laila's throat and hoped she hadn't broken her ribs while pushing her chest really hard to resuscitate her.
Officials say the girl died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen, which split her pancreas and lacerated her liver.
Rosenbaum worked for the local prosecutor; her husband had been a correctional officer. Laila was with the couple for four months.
Laila's mother lost custody due to drug addiction.
