VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- The love for art and the love for helping local families is coming together for a special event Thursday in Valdosta.
A Piece of my heART Exhibition and Auction will be held at the Turner Center for the Arts. A partnership with Leadership Lowndes, the proceeds of the event will be going to Family Autism Support Team.
While pictures are worth a thousand words, these ones mean help for local families.
"What we did is we had two art classes for local children on the spectrum, and they created some awesome works of art, so those will be auctioned off at this event," said Nikki Stewart with Leadership Lowndes Group One. "We wanted to do something that would not only raise funds for this organization, to keep them going and maybe be able to expand, but we also wanted to create an event that the kids could enjoy."
The event is meant to raise awareness about autism in the community and the resources available. One of the goals of FAST is to make Valdosta more autism friendly.
"That's not only important for the children but for the families, because several of the families don't get to go out and eat, or go to the movies, just do activities that other families get to do," said Ana Allen, FAST Director.
The program is hoping to start new programs, like a FAST closet. It would provide special clothing and resources for families, like weighted blankets or compression vests, that they may not be able to afford.
A Piece of my heART will have live music and food. Tickets are still available. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Turner Center for the Arts.
