Alexandria Saahir, 25, was arrested on a felony child neglect charge on August 26, according to police records.

MONTICELLO, Fla. (WCTV) — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office arrested a day care worker after she left a 16-month-old child in a hot car on August 16.

Alexandria Saahir, 25, was arrested on a felony child neglect charge on August 26, according to Monticello police records.

When police arrived to Jefferson County Early Head Start Day Care at 11 a.m. on the day of the incident, they found out a child care worker took the baby out of the unlocked car after she saw it banging on the window while she was taking out the trash.

Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services was contacted and determined the child was OK.

Saahir told police before she got to work, she was putting her child in her car and saw a friend putting their child in their car, according to the arrest report. Saahir volunteered to take her friend's child to the day care since she was going there anyway. She told police she was the child's god mother and had taken the child to the day care almost everyday in the past, but not this year, the report said.

Saahir picked up someone else and their children and drove to the day care. She was talking to the woman she picked up, and continued the conversation as they pulled into the parking lot. Saahir told police she remembered getting her son out of the car, still talking to the woman, then clocking in at 8:21 a.m.

According to the report, Saahir got into an argument with a parent shortly after clocking in. Saahir said this distracted her, then she went to her classroom.

Saahir told police the next thing she remembered was a staff member coming in her classroom telling her she had left the child in her car. Police asked her if she left the baby in the car intentionally. She told them it was an accident.

Saahir said she had a lot going on at both work and home and it caused her to be distracted her in taking care of the child, the report said. This was the first time she took the child to the day care this year, according to the report.

Saahir is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. on October 7.
