LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) -- Lowndes County Schools increased security Wednesday at Lowndes Middle School after a threat to the school was made on social media.
Lowndes County officials said a teen left a message on Snapchat, saying they were going to bring weapons and do harm at the school.
Sheriff's officials said they were made aware of the threat when someone saw it on social media and called 911. Sheriff Ashley Paulk said that notification is exactly what he wants to see happen in order for these threats to be taken seriously.
Authorities said the teen was taken in to custody Monday night and questioned. He also received a mental health evaluation from South Georgia Medical Center.
Officials said they were able to search the teen's home, and did not find any weapons.
The Lowndes County Officials said they will take every threat like this seriously no matter what, and will continue to investigate.
"Anything like that we're going to take very seriously, especially in this climate. Look at El Paso, look at Ohio, loot at all the other things," said Sheriff Ashley Paulk. "I want the public to be aware, and I want parents to be aware that they need to kind of monitor what their children do."
Lowndes County School officials said the teen is not enrolled at Lowndes Middle School.
Sheriff Paulk said, because he is a juvenile, the case is turned over the the state's Department of Juvenile Justice. Paulk said department authorities have since returned the teen to his parents, and any further prosecution will be up to the department's discretion.
"In this case, Juvenile Justice had turned him back over to his mother, which I don't agree with, obviously. I think there should be more evaluation done, and a lot more looking in to from their side of it, but that's their call," Paulk said.
Lowndes County Schools officials declined to go on camera Wednesday, but in a statement, district officials said they take every situation like this seriously, and are grateful for the swift action of the sheriff's office.
