THOMAS COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) – Authorities say an emu that got loose over the weekend in Thomas County has been captured.

"They were saying there was an emu walking on the side the road. You don't see emus walking down the side of the road in our area too often, so we started getting calls on it," said Capt. Steve Jones with the Thomas County Sheriff's Office.

TCSO says a couple from Miccosukee, Florida located the emu on Sunday evening near Metcalf Road in Thomas County.

"We were afraid the emu may be harmed or get run over, so we started making calls to find someone who could take him," said Jones.

Deputies responded to the scene to help corral the emu onto a trailer. The couple then brought the emu back to Miccosukee to keep it safe until the owner could be notified.

The emu's owner, also of Miccosukee, was contacted and picked up the large bird on Monday.
