Agriculture officer killed in Taylor County crash

TAYLOR COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the victim in a fiery fatal car crash on U.S. Highway 19 from Monday.

FHP has identified the victim as 25 year-old Joshua Montaad of Safety Harbor.

Montaad was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials have not released an official cause for the crash.

WCTV has also learned that Montaad was a law enforcement officer with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement.

Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam issued the following statement on the news of Montaad's passing:

“Officer Joshua Albert Sanchez Montaad tragically lost his life in a fatal crash while in the line of duty. It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of such a dedicated and vibrant man who chose to make selflessly serving others his life’s work.

“I pray for Officer Montaad’s family, loved ones and colleagues during this time of sorrow, and may God be with us all as we grieve."

Governor Rick Scott issued the following statement Thursday:

"Ann and I are saddened to hear of the tragic death of Officer Montaad and our hearts go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Choosing to serve our state as a law enforcement officer is a heroic and selfless decision, and Joshua will be remembered for his courageous service and commitment to protecting our families and communities."

"We are thankful for the brave law enforcement officers that work each day to keep our state safe and we will continue to pray for their safety."

TAYLOR COUNTY, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fiery fatal crash in Taylor County.

According to FHP, the crash occurred just before noon on Tuesday on U.S.19 near Burley Brannen Road.

The crash report states a Ford Expedition was heading north on U.S. 19 and traveled off the roadway onto the east grass shoulder. The car crashed into a tree and then caught on fire.

The driver of the car, a 25-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the driver is not being released pending next of kin notification, but FHP reports he was from Safety Harbor, Florida.

A source has confirmed to WCTV that a law enforcement vehicle was involved in the crash, but they were unable to confirm which agency it belonged to.
