HAVANA, Fla. (WCTV) -- A day of rescue missions in Havana, Florida occurred on Wednesday; thankfully, they were not the real emergencies.

Wendesday was the first surface mine rescue competition in the Southeast presented by the Florida Mine Safety program.

Miners learned how to rescue fellow colleagues in need, and participated in tasks such as performing first aid and acting fast in the case of emergencies. Organizers say most mines are rural so training is crucial.

"They will respond to that emergency to try to get the patient assessed and transported as quickly as possible," said one event organizer.

The training also served as a competition; trophies were awarded for the best response. Training started on Monday and will wrap up on Thursday.

The Florida Mine Safety program plans to host the event again next year.
