TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Thursday morning, basketball star Jason Collins and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum spoke to the Florida State University Democratic National Society.

Their goal was not only to support Hillary Clinton but to let students know how they play a pivotal role in this upcoming election.

"It’s important that everybody vote. Especially in college because I remember being a college student and being excited that I got to take part in the political process and the American process of electing our future president and senators,” said Collins.

Collins said he’s known the Clintons for almost 20 years, having first met them through their daughter Chelsea Clinton in college.

Collins is also one of the first openly gay basketball players in the league. He said the Clintons gave him an immense amount of support when he decided to open up about his sexuality. He said because of actions like this, he will always support the Clintons.

Collins will be visiting the University of Florida tomorrow morning to talk to more students.
