TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- One of the inaugural events for Governor Ron DeSantis included the Bold Vision for a Brighter Future: Legislative Luncheon.
It was held Tuesday afternoon after DeSantis was sworn in as Florida's 46th governor.
For the first time in inaugural history, DeSantis addressed Florida’s legislative leaders and Cabinet officials on the fourth floor of the Capitol
Rotunda between the chambers of the Florida Senate and the Florida House of Representatives.
DeSantis discussed his plans to work with the state’s elected leaders and continue to build on success and address the challenges that lie ahead.
He told legislators they have an important job to do. DeSantis said he does not want a replica of the system in Washington D.C., and he advised legislators against "shenanigans".
“I obviously will be on the lookout to police against that should you choose to go down that road. I don’t think you will. But, use the authority that you have. Have a system where the branches are competing with one another. There needs to be that kind of healthy debate. That’s really, I think the way things are supposed to work,” he said.
DeSantis says the legislators are an equal branch to the executive branch and says they should exercise their power accordingly. He says that’s what makes government work better.
