TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Quinn Gray has stepped down as head coach of the Lincoln High School football team, he confirmed to WCTV on Wednesday night.

According Lincoln Athletic Director Joe Vallese, Gray, a former Florida A&M quarterback, is leaving Lincoln to take a collegiate coaching opportunity.

Vallese said he heard Tuesday evening that Gray would be stepping down, and his mind began to race immediately.

"I tip my cap to him. It's a big loss. He did a great job," Vallese said.

"I heard about it last night, I posted the job this morning. I'm going to give it about a week, I'm going to start calling people in the next week or two," he added about beginning the coaching search.

Above all else, though, Vallese says the top priorities for the new head Trojan is that they fit the kids and the culture at LHS.

"Whatever we need to do to get the best fit possible," he said. "What's the best thing for our kids? We don't want them to take a step back. Bottom line, it's about what's best for Lincoln. What's going to help us down the road best, even if it's a bigger transition. We are opening it up for all the possibilities."

Gray led the Trojans to a 8-4 record in 2019, falling to Edgewater in the second round of the playoffs and went 27-21 in four years at LHS.
