Gun Safety Key to Cutting Down On Shootings

Tallahassee, Fla.

Charlie Strickland runs the Talon gun range in Gadsden County.

He points to Florida law saying gun owners with minors under the age of 15 in their home need to secure their firearm in a safe and secure location.

"If we want to exercise our rights and we want to defend our homes and protect ourselves we also have a responsibility to make sure that we do so safely," said Strickland.

This includes something as simple as a cable lock. Another way to keep kids away from guns is by using a safe where you can actually program a code so that only you can reach your weapon.

Strickland says many criminals often steal weapons from homes which is why it's up to the community to lock guns away when they're not in use.

"[By not locking guns up] they make these weapons available to the criminal element in our society and that's on us that's our responsibility."
