TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- The Leon County Sheriff's Office is alerting residents to a recent rash of scam phone calls, during which the caller claims to be an LCSO Lieutenant.

LCSO says they received numerous calls on Thursday from citizens reporting that someone had called them, identifying themselves as "Lt. Raines calling from LCSO." The caller then instructs citizens to purchase a prepaid debit card or else they will be taken to jail for "missed court dates."

The Leon County Sheriff's Office says this is a scam and LCSO will never ask for Green Dot cards for payment.

Citizens who receive this type of phone call should hang up immediately.
