TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Local school districts and universities are announcing closures due to the threat of severe winter weather.

Leon County Schools, Hamilton County Schools, Gadsden County Schools and Jefferson County Schools have announced that schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 3.

Florida State University, FAMU and TCC have also announced cancellations or delayed openings. FSU will close at midnight Tuesday and will reopen at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

FAMU and TCC will reopen on Thursday.

The closures come as Winter Storm Warnings were issued on Tuesday afternoon for much of the WCTV viewing area, effective until Wednesday at noon.

Leon County Schools spokesperson Chris Petley says, "In an abundance of caution and with the safety of our students and staff in mind we have made the decision to CLOSE all Leon County Schools for tomorrow Wednesday, January 3, 2018. All afterschool activities will be cancelled as well. Employees are not to report to work unless contacted by your supervisor."

LCS officials came to the decision just after 4 p.m. Tuesday following a call with the National Weather Service and the Leon County Emergency Management Office.
