TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Many people in the area aren't quite prepared for temperatures to drop below freezing.
Local retailers say they have seen an influx of people coming in to stock up on winter gear.
Caroline Smith says she was forced to be outside in the cold Tuesday because of a plumbing issue at home.
Thank goodness, she says, she ran out to buy a winter coat just last week.
"I had to go out and get a coat to make sure I'd be alright, especially when it rains. When you have to be outside or on the go, you got to make sure everyone's warm and safe so we don't come home with the flu," Smith said.
Some tips to staying warm outside: Stay dry, protect your core, wear a hat and cover your hands. Experts say mittens are actually warmer than gloves. Keeping your torso insulated is the best way to keep the rest of you warm.
Another tip is to stay hydrated. Experts say water is amazing for retaining body heat.
