TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- A special honor was bestowed upon a Leon County Schools teacher Wednesday morning.

Sabal Palm Elementary fifth grade teacher Yashica Washington received the Glenn-Howell Distinguished Educator of the Year Award.

Washington said it was her own fifth grade teacher who inspired her to get into education, something she says is her passion.

"Everyday, I seek to inspire my kids," she said. "We start with pep talks and build ourselves up. I challenge them to be better than they were the day before. I was happy to make it to the top five and this is a dream come true."

Every year, the award is presented to a public school educator who makes a significant impact in the lives of minority students.
