VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) -- A hometown hero returned to Valdosta Wednesday to teach kids about the importance of reading.

Super Bowl Champion Malcolm Mitchell stopped at S.L. Mason Elementary in Valdosta Wednesday to read with students. One of the school's fourth grade classes won the 'Read with Malcolm' Read Bowl, a national reading challenge with more than 5,000 students participating.

Mitchell told the elementary students stories of growing up in their community, struggling with reading himself, hoping to inspire them to persevere in their own challenges.

"To give yourself the best chance to accomplish your goals you have to read, you just have to face that challenge and never give up, and when things get tough, understand that's the way it's supposed to be because good things in life don't come easy," Mitchell said.

Every student at S.L. Mason received a copy of Mitchell's book, The Magician's Hat.
