TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- One person was arrested after a shooting at a Tallahassee apartment complex on Friday. It happened just after noon at The Commons at Tallahassee Apartments off of West Tharpe Street, said Tallahassee Police Department Public Information Officer Damon Miller.

According to WCTV records, it is the 38th gun incident in the city in 2019. Those shootings resulted in 37 people shot and 7 deaths.

"Honestly, it's getting kind of out of control. It's been 3 in the last year," said resident Amarius Howard, who has lived in complex for less than a year. "I don't feel protected much. I just try to protect myself."

Howard said she stays indoors at night and plans to move out as soon as her lease expires.

21-year-old Demetrius Thompson was arrested for the incident and charged with discharging a firearm in public, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and probation violation, Miller said. He was booked into the Leon County Detention Facility.

The incident followed the shooting death of a man on May 27th and a murder during a double shooting in September of 2018.

"It's time to go be in a safe space so I can be more comfortable in my own home," Howard said.

A message left with an answering service for the Commons Apartment complex on Friday night was not immediately returned. Tallahassee police have not released what led up to this most recent gun fire.
